To be able to make a living doing something in nature, being creative in someway, always seemed like a good idea to me. I never really knew what I wanted to ‘do’ though, until I saw that first glowing ball of glass, under the magical circle of light that was the total solar eclipse. It was 2001, at the Solipse festival in the bush in Zambia, where I struck up a friendship with Donna Eicholz, after spying her working the glass over a flame from her portable caravan studio next to the dance floor. I was mesmerised and spent many hours just watching this amazing process unfold. My life took a new direction. Finally, in 2003 when in Australia, I took a beginners bead making class. To my amazement, all it involved was an hour or two of instruction, and then we were let loose with a few rods of glass to create as we pleased. I enjoyed myself so much,I arranged to come in to just make beads for another day. Within a month, I had all the equipment I needed, a colourful selection of glass, and Corinna Tettingers step-by-step book of glass bead making. With that in hand, i was ready to start. Gradually, by trial and error, I've developed an understanding of the nature of glass and continue to learn and be amazed by it's qualities and the pleasure of working with it. About Malawi |
